What In The Hell Is Wrong With Me?

Here I am again, crying my eyes out to Dvořák's 9th Symphony! Why does that music rend my heart so? The great Luciano Pavarotti above all others, always brought tears to my eyes, with his truly lovely tenor voice. What is it about beautiful music, that makes us shed tears? What kind of music makes you weep?

There's a few that can get me wet eyed...

Air on a G string by Bach is probably the worst (best?)

For more modern music I think Jewel with Foolish Games is one that gets me going.

I now get damp eyes with Coldplay's Viva la Vida.

This is going to sound like an ad for middle European composers; "If you liked Dvorak's ninth, wait until you have heard...."LOL

Dvorak's eighth is a wonderful piece too, with heroic bits and string writing that comes as close to making me weep as any music can without having some association with a loved one.

The other mid-European to try is Smetana. "The Moldau" from "Ma Vlast" is another truly vast bit of writing that you might find pulls on the heart.

For me, tears always when I listed to Marion Anderson sing Schubert's "Ave Maria".

Thanks for asking.

Do you really hate it that much?

Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks always makes me cry, because I know I am gonna have to buy a new radio to replace the one I smash when it comes on....

Oh wait....

Hugs, and passes a tissue...

"Push" by Sarah McLachlan gets to me because it so incredibly describes the relationship I feel towards my wife and how she has accepted me the way I am...unconditionally. You can hear it on one of my recent blogs if you like.

For me its all silly poppy stuff. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol makes me cry every time. Actually I can just be driving and run through that opening guitar bit in my head and start crying my eyes out.

Also, "Pretty Baby" by Vanessa Carlton.

Pretty Baby,
don't you leave me.
I have been saving smiles for you.

Pretty baby,
Why can't you see,
you're the one that I belong to.

I'll be the embrace that keeps you warm,
and you're the sun that breaks the storm.

I'll be alright
and I'll sleep sound,
as long as you keep coming 'round.

Oh pretty baby.

@ Chrissie

LOL! I almost spewed coffee out my nose when I read your comment!

Just for you sweetie:

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Recently, "Take Me Home" by Donna Lewis (see my March 29th entry if you haven't already), which just happened to be the perfect song to capture my feelings at this point in my life. "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion, because it reminds me of the Titanic movie, which has made me cry my eyes out every time I see it.

Oh, and Shandy! Your post with "Pretty Baby" really made me perk up! If Nikki and I could be said to have a song that's ours, it's that one. We were seeing each other for less than a week, and I told her I love her (and she said it back), and then after dinner, I blasted the song with my car stereo and we slow danced in the parking lot in mid-November. Ahhh, the romance! :)

My comment went missing!

Classical: Beethoven's 7th and that well-known Bach toccata and fugue for cello come to mind.

Musicals: Pretty much all of West Side Story, especially "There's a Place for Us"; "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own" from Les Misérables; and "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked.

Pop: Too many to count, including the aforementioned "Chasing Cars" and "Vida La Vida." Also "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, although I prefer Allison Crowe's cover. And "Lullaby" by The Dixie Chicks. Oh, so many!

Another vote for Hallelujah. I also get misty for I'll stand By You by the Pretenders and Danny Boy.

Well, Melissa, right now I'm kind of digging Gold, Guns, and Girls, by Metric, but the only reason it makes me cry is because I want to be Emily Haines...or Tegan and Sara...or Hayley Williams...or Shirley Manson...or...Nicky!

Yes, I must confess, I'm a rocker. Always have been. Always will.

Very(!) late to the party, but I want to add one. "When I Was a Boy" by Dar Williams sets me off every time. It has a gender variance theme that many of us can relate to.
